A miniature current transformer (mini CT) is a compact, high-precision electromagnetic device designed to convert high alternating currents (AC) into smaller, manageable milliamperage signals for measurement, monitoring, and protection in electrical systems. Unlike traditional large-scale current transformers, it features a miniaturized structure that fits seamlessly into printed circuit boards (PCBs), smart devices, and compact electrical enclosures, making it indispensable in modern digital and intelligent power systems.

Operating on the principle of electromagnetic induction, similar to transformers, mini CTs consist of four core components: a primary winding, a secondary winding, a high-permeability core (often made of permalloy or nanocrystalline material), and insulation encasement (typically epoxy resin). The primary winding, connected to the measured current circuit, has a small number of turns, while the secondary winding, linked to measuring instruments or protective relays, has more turns. The current ratio (Kn) is the ratio of the primary rated current (I1n) to the secondary rated current (I2n), expressed as Kn = I1n / I2n, ensuring proportional current conversion.

Mini CTs are primarily categorized into two types based on their function: measurement and protection. Measurement mini CTs work with digital meters to monitor current, voltage, and power in normal operating conditions, requiring high accuracy (often 0.1% to 0.5% class) and reliable insulation to protect instruments during fault currents. Protection mini CTs collaborate with relays to detect short circuits or overloads, activating fault isolation only when currents surge to several times the normal level, with accuracy classes of 5P or 10P for reliable fault response.

Key features of mini CTs include compact size, low phase shift, wide operating temperature range (-40℃ to 95℃), and compliance with international standards such as IEC 60044-1 and IEC 61869-2. They also offer diverse output signals (4-20mA, 0-5V) and non-intrusive installation options like split-core or clamp-on designs, which allow deployment without cutting existing power cables.

Widely applied across industries, miniature transformer  play a crucial role in smart meters, renewable energy systems (solar string monitoring), HVAC systems, industrial machinery, and battery energy storage. They act as a bridge between high-current power lines and digital sampling devices, enabling safe, accurate energy management and predictive maintenance. As power systems become more intelligent, mini CTs continue to evolve toward higher integration, digital outputs, and low power consumption, supporting the development of smart grids and energy Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks.
