A direct current current transformer, commonly known as a DC CT, is a specialized sensing device designed to measure direct current in power systems, industrial equipment and new energy installations. Unlike conventional AC current transformers that rely on alternating magnetic flux for induction, standard CTs cannot work with steady DC because constant direct current produces an unchanging magnetic field, which fails to induce voltage in secondary windings. DC CTs adopt alternative working principles, including the Hall effect, fluxgate technology and zero-flux compensation, to capture static or slowly varying DC signals.

The core working principle of the widely used Hall-effect DC CT depends on the Hall semiconductor chip. When DC flows through the primary conductor, it generates a stable magnetic field proportional to the current magnitude. The Hall element placed inside this magnetic field outputs a tiny Hall voltage. After amplification, filtering and signal conditioning, this voltage is converted into a standard secondary signal such as 4–20 mA or low-voltage analog output, which can be read by meters, PLCs and data acquisition systems. Fluxgate DC CTs deliver higher precision for high-accuracy scenarios. They use auxiliary excitation windings to detect residual DC magnetic flux in the magnetic core and apply compensation current to cancel core saturation, achieving extremely low measurement error even under large DC.

Structurally, DC CTs are divided into split-core and solid-core types. Split-core models can be installed without cutting off the primary cable, which greatly facilitates on-site retrofitting and maintenance. The primary side usually carries high DC, while the secondary circuit is isolated from the high-voltage primary to protect backend measuring instruments and operators. Typical measurement ranges cover small-amperage control currents up to thousands of amps used in photovoltaic energy storage, electric vehicle charging piles and DC traction power supplies.

DC CTs have obvious application value in modern power industries. Renewable energy stations, DC microgrids and battery energy storage systems require real-time DC monitoring for overcurrent protection, power calculation and state-of-charge evaluation. In metallurgy and electrolysis factories, large DC CTs track heavy electrolytic currents to stabilize production parameters. Nevertheless, DC CTs have limitations. Hall-based sensors are susceptible to temperature drift and external stray magnetic interference, which affects long-term stability. Fluxgate types offer better precision but come with higher costs and more complex drive circuits.

In summary, DC current transformers fill the measurement gap left by traditional AC transformers. By converting DC magnetic fields into measurable electrical signals, they become indispensable sensing components for DC power systems. Continuous optimization focuses on reducing temperature drift, improving anti-interference ability and miniaturizing hardware to adapt to the fast-growing new energy industry.
