A small transformer is an electrical device that transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another while changing the voltage level. Another important function is electrical isolation. A small transformer can separate the input circuit from the output circuit without a direct electrical connection. This helps improve safety by reducing the risk of electric shock and protecting sensitive electronic components from power surges or electrical noise.


Small transformers are also used in control and measurement systems. For example, they can be used in industrial control panels, automation equipment, communication systems, and monitoring devices. In these applications, transformers provide accurate voltage signals or power supplies for sensors, meters, and controllers.


In power electronics, small transformers are commonly found in switch-mode power supplies (SMPS), chargers, LED drivers, and consumer electronics. They help convert electrical energy efficiently while keeping the equipment compact and lightweight. High-frequency small transformers used in modern electronics are designed with special magnetic cores to improve efficiency and reduce size.


Compared with large power transformers used in electrical grids, small transformers handle lower power levels and are designed for compact applications. They are usually rated from a few watts to several hundred watts, depending on their purpose.


Common types of small transformers include step-down transformers, step-up transformers, isolation transformers, current transformers, and pulse transformers. Step-down transformers reduce voltage, step-up transformers increase voltage, isolation transformers provide safety separation, and current transformers measure electrical current in circuits.
