A leakage current sensor is a high-precision measuring component specially designed to track residual leakage current inside power circuits, acting as the first line of defence against electric shock and electrical fire hazards in modern power distribution, new energy and industrial control systems. Ordinary current transformers only measure load current, yet this sensor focuses on tiny stray currents escaping from damaged insulation, aging cables, faulty wiring or incomplete equipment grounding, which pose hidden safety risks hard to spot via regular monitoring tools. It converts faint leakage signals into readable electrical outputs to support real-time monitoring, threshold alarming and power interlock protection.

The core working mechanism relies on the magnetic balance principle of a toroidal core. All live and neutral conductors pass through the ring-shaped magnetic core simultaneously. When the circuit works normally, the equal currents flowing in opposite directions generate offset magnetic fluxes, leaving zero induced voltage in the winding. Once leakage happens, part of the current flows to the earth instead of returning through the neutral line, breaking the magnetic balance. The coil captures the resulting weak magnetic fluctuation, and built-in circuits amplify, filter and calibrate the signal to output accurate leakage current values ranging from microamps to several amperes. Advanced types adopt magnetic modulation technology to detect both alternating and direct leakage current, complying with international B-type safety standards for new energy equipment.

This sensor boasts prominent advantages including non-contact measurement, minimal power loss, strong anti-electromagnetic interference and long service life. Its split-core version allows quick installation without cutting off power, greatly improving maintenance efficiency in finished power systems. In complex working environments with high frequency inverters, large motors and dense wiring, it maintains stable detection accuracy without frequent calibration. When monitored leakage exceeds the preset safety limit, the sensor sends instant trigger signals to circuit breakers, alarms or intelligent management platforms, cutting power supply within milliseconds to avoid casualties and equipment burnout.

Its application scope keeps expanding with the development of clean energy and smart grids. It is widely installed in EV charging stations, photovoltaic combiner boxes, energy storage battery cabinets, industrial low-voltage distribution cabinets and household electrical control boxes. As insulation degradation risks grow with long-term equipment operation, the demand for reliable leakage monitoring keeps rising. Leakage current sensors continuously secure the stable operation of electrical infrastructure, reduce safety accident rates, and deliver remarkable value in protecting personal safety and corporate property, making them irreplaceable core safety devices across all electricity-consuming industries.
