A closed loop current sensor is a high precision device used to measure alternating current and direct current in electrical systems. It is also known as a compensated current sensor because it uses a magnetic feedback principle to improve measurement accuracy and stability. Closed loop current sensors are widely used in industrial automation, renewable energy systems, power supplies, motor drives, electric vehicles, and precision monitoring equipment where reliable current measurement is essential.

The working principle of a closed loop current sensor is based on magnetic balance technology. When current flows through the primary conductor, it generates a magnetic field inside the sensor core. A magnetic detector, usually a Hall element, senses this magnetic field and sends a signal to an internal amplifier circuit. The amplifier then drives a compensation current through a secondary winding in the opposite direction. This compensation current creates an opposing magnetic field that balances the original magnetic flux inside the core. The output signal is directly proportional to the compensation current, allowing the sensor to provide highly accurate current measurement.

One of the main advantages of a closed loop current sensor is its excellent accuracy. Because the magnetic flux is continuously compensated, the sensor achieves very low offset error, high linearity, and minimal temperature drift. Compared with open loop current sensors, closed loop designs provide faster response time and better performance in applications requiring precise current detection. This makes them suitable for high frequency switching systems and sensitive electronic equipment.

Another important feature is electrical isolation. The primary conductor and output circuit are electrically isolated, which improves safety and protects monitoring devices from high voltage damage. This isolation capability is especially valuable in power electronics, inverter systems, battery management systems, and industrial control equipment.

Closed loop current sensors are available in different structures and current ranges. Some models are designed for PCB mounting in compact electronic equipment, while others use split core or busbar structures for industrial power systems. The sensor can measure currents from a few amperes to several thousand amperes depending on the application requirements.

These sensors are widely used in variable frequency drives, servo motor systems, UPS power supplies, solar inverters, wind power converters, railway traction systems, and electric vehicle charging stations. In renewable energy systems, accurate current monitoring helps improve energy efficiency and system reliability. In industrial automation, closed loop current sensors support precise motor control and equipment protection by continuously monitoring load conditions.

Compared with traditional current transformers, closed loop current sensors can measure both AC and DC currents, making them more versatile for modern electronic systems. They also provide better dynamic performance and higher bandwidth, which are important in fast switching applications such as IGBT and MOSFET based circuits.

As modern electrical equipment becomes more intelligent and energy efficient, the demand for high precision current sensing technology continues to increase. Closed loop current sensors play an important role in ensuring safe operation, improving control accuracy, and enhancing system performance across many industries. Their combination of precision, isolation, stability, and fast response makes them an ideal solution for advanced current measurement applications.
