A current transformer (CT) is an essential instrument transformer widely applied in power generation, transmission, and distribution systems. Its primary function is to step down high alternating current in power lines to a standardized low current signal for accurate measurement, metering, and relay protection. Modern current transformer design focuses on high measurement accuracy, low electromagnetic loss, good linearity, and strong anti-interference capability to adapt to complex grid operating conditions.

The core structure of a current transformer consists of a magnetic core, primary winding, secondary winding, and insulating packaging. In design practice, the magnetic core is the most critical component that determines overall performance. High-quality silicon steel alloy or nanocrystalline materials are commonly selected due to their high magnetic permeability, low hysteresis loss, and stable saturation characteristics. A reasonable core cross-section and closed magnetic path can effectively reduce magnetic leakage, minimize excitation current, and suppress ratio and phase errors during current conversion.

Winding configuration is another key design procedure. The primary winding usually adopts a single-turn or few-turn structure to carry large system current, while the secondary winding is wound with fine enameled wire in multiple turns to induce standard low current output. Designers must strictly follow the current transformation ratio to ensure consistent proportional conversion between primary and secondary current. Meanwhile, uniform winding distribution helps avoid local magnetic saturation and improves working stability under short-circuit and overload conditions.

Error control is the core objective of CT design. Current errors and phase displacement are mainly caused by excitation loss and core saturation. To enhance accuracy, designers optimize core material thickness, reduce air gaps, and limit the working magnetic flux density within the linear region. In addition, insulation design is indispensable. High-performance insulating materials are used to withstand system overvoltage, prevent partial discharge, and guarantee long-term operational safety in high-voltage environments.

With the development of smart grids, current transformer design is continuously upgraded. Miniaturization, low power consumption, and wide-frequency response have become new development trends. Optimized structural design and advanced magnetic materials enable modern CTs to maintain high precision under fluctuating loads and complex harmonic conditions. In conclusion, scientific and standardized current transformer design ensures reliable current signal acquisition, which provides fundamental support for the safe, stable, and intelligent operation of modern power systems.
