A zero sequence current transformer(Core Balance Current Transformer,CBCT), also known as core balance current transformer or residual current transformer, is a special sensing device widely used in power distribution systems for earth fault and leakage protection. Unlike ordinary current transformers that measure single-phase load current, this device focuses on detecting the vector sum of all currents passing through its annular magnetic core.

Its working principle is based on the balance of three-phase alternating current. Under normal working conditions with balanced three-phase loads, the sum of currents of phase A, phase B and phase C equals zero. The magnetic fluxes generated by each phase current offset each other completely inside the closed ring core, so no current signal will be output from the secondary winding. If insulation damage, cable aging or electric shock accidents happen, part of the current flows to the ground instead of returning through neutral wires. An unbalanced residual current appears and creates net magnetic flux in the core. The secondary coil will then produce a proportional weak current signal and send it to matched protection relays or circuit breakers.

The main structure of a zero sequence current transformer includes three basic parts. The first is a closed annular magnetic core. Nanocrystalline alloy cores are used for high-sensitivity scenarios to detect small leakage currents for personal safety, while silicon steel cores are chosen for large earth fault detection in medium voltage systems. The second part is evenly wound secondary copper coil. Users must never leave the secondary circuit open, as this will produce dangerous high voltage and damage related equipment. The third part is insulated plastic shell with different waterproof and dustproof grades for indoor or outdoor installation.

This device has multiple practical classifications according to structure and usage. Integral ring types offer high measurement accuracy for new power cabinets, while split open types allow convenient installation on finished cables without cutting wires. Low voltage models serve residential buildings, charging piles and photovoltaic equipment, and medium voltage versions work with 10kV power grid relay protection.

Zero sequence current transformers play an irreplaceable role in electrical safety. In residential distribution boxes, they cooperate with residual current devices to cut power within milliseconds once 30mA leakage current occurs to prevent fatal electric shock. In industrial workshops, they monitor motor winding faults to avoid equipment burning. For new energy facilities such as charging piles and photovoltaic combiner boxes, they continuously track cable insulation conditions to reduce fire risks.

Correct installation directly affects detection performance. All live wires including three phases and neutral line must pass through the core center together, while the protective earth wire needs to bypass the ring to avoid signal offset. Shielded twisted wires are suggested for secondary connection to resist electromagnetic interference from inverters and contactors.

In short, zero sequence current transformers act as the front-line sensor of earth fault protection. They capture tiny abnormal leakage signals that cannot be found by regular current measuring equipment, effectively protecting power equipment, property and personal safety in civil, industrial and new energy power systems.
